When people talk about the "future of skincare," I don't think any of us are anticipating something so futuristic. Whether you're a serial Instagrammer or just keeping your finger on the pulse of the latest and coolest skincare innovations, you've probably heard something about LED skin treatments. In the past, these fancy treatments could only be performed in the office under the skilled hands of your esthetician. Now, when your skin loves the fancy stuff, you can use this luxury at your leisure.

What does LED light therapy do?

LED light therapy is actually a NASA technology that has been adopted by the skincare community for its ability to heal wounds and suppress inflammation. Blue light frequencies are commonly used to treat acne, while red light frequencies are used for anti-aging.

Is LED light therapy safe?

After years of serving healthy skin by avoiding the sun's UV rays , purposefully treating your face with light may feel counterintuitive. But aestheticians, dermatologists and beauty editors agree: LED light therapy is a safe and effective treatment for your complexion.

Do LED masks really work?

The research behind photon therapy LED masks has focused on the lights used, and if you follow these findings, LED masks may be beneficial for your skin.

For example, in a study that included 52 female participants published in the March 2017 issue of the journal Dermatologic Surgery , researchers found that red LED light treatment improved the measurement of eye wrinkles. Another study, in the August 2018 issue of Surgical and Medical Lasers, rated LED devices a "C" for skin rejuvenation (improved elasticity, hydration, wrinkles). It may take some time to see improvements in certain measures (e.g., wrinkles), and they believe longer-term studies are needed.

Speaking of acne, a review of studies in the March-April 2017 issue of Dermatology Clinics noted a 46% to 76% reduction in blemishes after 4 to 12 weeks of treatment with red and blue light for acne. In a review of 37 clinical trials published in the May 2021 Archives of Dermatologic Research, the authors examined home devices and their efficacy for various skin conditions, ultimately recommending LED for acne. That said, other studies on blue light, such as the review published in the Annals of Family Medicine from November 2019 to December 2019, are far less promising in terms of blue light's ability to cleanse the skin.

Studies have shown that blue light can penetrate hair follicles and pores. Bacteria are very sensitive to the blue light spectrum. It stops their metabolism and kills them. This helps prevent future breakthroughs. Unlike topical treatments that relieve inflammation and bacteria on the skin's surface, light therapy eliminates acne-causing bacteria from the skin before the skin begins to feed on the oil glands, which cause redness and inflammation. Because red light can reduce inflammation, it can also be used in combination with blue light to treat acne.
